Alan J.
Politowski
January 10, 1947 – January 24, 2024
Alan (Al) John Politowski was born January 10, 1947 to John and Josephine (nee Komor) Politowski in St. Louis, MO. It was on their 55th wedding anniversary, January 24th, 2024, that his cherished Cathy kissed Al goodbye and he went to be with Jesus; ending his suffering they had endured together for the last ten years.
Al loved God, his family, and his country. He was devoted husband of Cathleen "Cathy" (nee Wagner), treasured and esteemed dad to Allison (Kevin) Owenby and the late Michael Politowski, and loved and respected grandpa to five Owenby grandsons, Jeremy, Nathaniel, Tyeson, Graham, and Collin, who will surely miss the fun and endearing bantering any time they were with grandpa. Al was a prized brother to the late Glenn Politowski and his sister, Karen (late Tom) Small, a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, and friend to many; ALL who will miss him greatly.
After completing 12th grade at St Louis Prep Seminary in Shrewsbury, Al worked his way through college while employed at Emory Air Freight; where he met his future wife of 55 years. He graduated with honors receiving a BS of Science in Commerce (Accounting) from St. Louis University.
January 1969 Al enlisted in U.S. Army, Military Intelligence, 1st Cav Division and he and Cathy were married January 24. Al's three-year service to his country included completion of Vietnamese Language School and Counter Intelligence Agent course (which he completed with distinguished honors and was named to the Commandant's List). His last year was served in Vietnam before being discharged in 1972.
In 1973 Al and Cathy welcomed their first child, Allison, followed by their son Michael in 1978. In the years that followed five grandsons became and remain the delight of their lives.
His career path included
· Manager at a Big Eight Public accounting firm, Arthur Anderson, where he attained his Missouri CPA license, and
· Chief Financial Officer/VP Finance for Sherwood Medical, a large St Louis-based Medical Device Company
After many years of mergers, acquisitions, and an overall distinguished career in finance, Al retired as Assistant Controller of Wyeth Pharmaceutical Corporation in New Jersey, March 2006.
During his retirement Al listed his hobbies as oldies music from 50s and 60s, volunteer work at Humane Society, and tax returns during tax season.
Al exceled at whatever he did and received numerous distinguished honors and accolades over his lifetime whether business or military BUT what he valued most was family and friends. Al earned the love and respect of many of his former classmates, military comrades, and business colleagues who remain loyal friends to this day. He was generous beyond compare and the welfare of his family and friends was always top of mind. Al was a man of impeccable character. Integrity, loyalty, and compassion were first among his many admirable attributes. From his youth Al and his dad shared a love for Cardinal baseball. You could count on him to be in his season-ticket-holder-seat at every home opener. He bled Cardinal red and you would want him on your Cardinal trivia team while listening to the golden oldies.
Over the past ten years there were many who assisted in Al's care but none more than his cherished Cathy.
The family wishes to thank all the Lutheran Senior Services (LSS) Hospice staff and many others who gave compassionate care to our beloved Al over the years. We are forever grateful.
