Charles Wayne Matthews, 88, passed away January 30, 2026, surrounded by his family.

He was born June 25, 1937 in Fredericktown, MO. He was one of three siblings and raised by his mother, Lillie (nee Statler) Matthews. He grew up in Jackson, MO then lived in St. Louis the duration of his life.

Wayne was the proud father of five children with his first wife, Carolyn. He then married Sally (nee Chocholousek) Matthews in 1985 and raised two step-daughters. Wayne had 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

Wayne loved to tell stories of his youth – having worked throughout high school at a drug store, while at the same time staying involved in football and sports and was always committed to his fitness and health.

He served in the army in the late 1950's and was honorably discharged from the reserves in 1963.

Wayne worked as a design engineer at McDonnell Douglas/Boeing for over 40 years and built a respected career. After retirement, he and Sally enjoyed traveling on cruises, with family, and to Europe.

Wayne loved life and took great pride in his physical fitness and health. He was an avid golfer and tennis player. He loved to dance and sing. He loved playing games with family, laughing, and was always game for anything active and competitive.

He was a man of faith and always had a prayer and a positive sentiment to share with friends and family.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 8 from 12-3:30 pm at Ortmann Stipanovich Funeral Home located at 12444 Olive Blvd in Creve Coeur. Funeral service will be from 2-2:30 pm. We invite all who knew Wayne to join us in honoring and celebrating his memory. Interment will be private. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
