Daniel Eugene Booher
July 12, 1946 - January 24, 2023
Fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, Daniel Eugene Booher passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, after a 2-year fight with esophageal cancer. He was 76. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gert (Guittar) Booher. He is also survived by his sister, Judith Ann Alberts, and his identical twin brother, David Arthur Booher (Terri). He was the proud son of Arthur Eugene Booher and Dorothy (Weber) Booher, both deceased.
His and Gert's lives were enriched with the love and concern for 14 nieces and nephews and 18 GrandNieces and GrandNephews. He has been blessed with living in St. Louis, no further than 30 miles from his brother or sister almost all his life. (Judy did not go to Vietnam) He grew up in Overland, and kept in contact with many of his childhood friends. He and his twin brother, Dave, carrottops, moved in the same social circles and, early on enjoyed it when people confused them for one another. He acquired many of Gert's work and high school friends who were special to him. He was an active member of Cardinal Ritter Council #6500 Knights of Columbus at St. Monica Church in Creve Coeur.
He and twin Dave both enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War, and served together as Machinist Mate 3rd Class on the aircraft carrier, USS Ticonderoga, serving missions outside of Vietnam. He went to college on the GI Bill, and met his wife Gert on a volleyball court 5 years after he got out of the Navy in 1969. She found his conversation about recycling paper and aluminum cans endearing. They were married in 1975, and enjoyed much together, especially power volleyball, jigsaw puzzles, Australian Shepherds, ice cream and woodworking dust.
He worked at Emerson Electric as a draftsman and CAD operator for 20 years, and then was involved in a mass layoff. At the height of his woodworking education, he worked at Woodcraft Supply. His last job was at Lear Seating putting the back seats into Astrovans. That company closed. He retired in 2012, and began to spend his time recycling metal to save the planet. He enjoyed searching on trash day in his neighborhood for metal on Mondays, and then searching with his sister Judy in her neighborhood on Tuesdays. In between, many of his friends saved their metal from the landfill by giving it to Dan. He spent hours in his shop stripping copper wire and separating types of metal to get the best price for clean pieces. He was a well-known figure at Didion Orf Recycling.
He was a talented woodworker who replaced a 15x30 deck, built furniture for the deck, tools for his shop, and even living room tables for friends and family who requested them. He meticulously maintained the houses he lived in. He was assisted by friends who have useful talents, and many of whom still call themselves the "Young Adult Club" where they met in their 20's.
Dan Booher was a stellar example of the common man. He will be dearly missed.
