David J.
Neubauer
July 21, 1940 – January 5, 2023
David J. Neubauer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and railfan passed away on January 5, 2023. David grew up in St. John, Missouri. He graduated from Mercy High School, attended St. Louis University, and served in the Army Reserves at Fort Leonard Wood for six years. He married Eileen Neubauer in 1961, and raised four daughters in Hazelwood, Missouri.
David worked in grocery stores most of his life - first at his father's store, Harry J. Neubauer Finer Foods, followed by Bettendorf-Rapp for 10 years, and then at Schnucks Markets for 40 years.
David had a passionate interest in trains, trolleys, and streetcars. He was highly regarded for his substantial knowledge of all things locomotive and was involved in multiple rail organizations. He was a volunteer at the WF&P (Wabash, Frisco & Pacific) Railroad for 70 years, serving in multiple leadership positions for five decades. The WF&P is an organization that operates 12-inch gauge steam locomotives along the Meramec River in Glencoe, Missouri. It is open to passengers from the first Sunday in May to the last Sunday in October.
A prolific user of quotation marks, David wrote newsletters for the WF&P and the St. Louis Railway Enthusiasts. He was also a frequent "contributor" to the letters to the editor section of the St. Louis Post Dispatch. As a "night owl" he typically wrote his pieces on a typewriter, at his kitchen table, in the middle of the night, listening to jazz on his earphones.
A lifelong "music enthusiast," David played the tenor, bass, and baritone saxophones, as well as the accordion. For many years he was a member of a 16-piece swing band and the Riverview Gardens Community Band.
David was preceded in death by his wife Eileen, his parents Harry and Florence, and his brother Daniel. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle Neubauer, Dr. Karen Neubauer (David Henke), Nancy Elledge (Ryan), and Susan Reynolds (Billy); and his grandchildren, Lauren, Alex, Sophia, Greta, August, Boone, and Dillon.
A visitation will be held Sunday, January 8, 2023, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Ortmann Funeral Home, 9222 Lackland Rd., Overland, MO 63114. On Monday, January 9, 2023, a Rosary will be said at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Low Requiem Mass at 10:00 a.m., at St. Mary's Assumption Church, 1126 Dolman St., St. Louis, MO 63104, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery, 5239 W.
