On Thursday, September 1, 2022 Dennis W. Nielsen, loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend passed away at the age of 80.
Dennis was born on December 3rd, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri to Helen (Strieker) and William (Bill) Nielsen. He graduated from De Andreis High School in 1959. After two years of active duty in the US Navy aboard the USS Orion and work as a St. Louis Police Officer, he graduated from UMSL and later went on for Master's studies in Criminal Justice at the State University of New York in Albany. He was active in the Missouri law enforcement community, serving as a counselor at the Dismas House, and spent the majority of his long career with the United States Courts as a Probation and Parole Officer, where he was given several key assignments. After retiring he worked as a contractor for the FBI until 2008.
On February 8,1964 he married Mary Ann Barnett. They raised three children, Michael (Ingeborg), Kirsten and August (Rebecca). He loved his family very much and considered his family, also consisting of his sisters, Kathleen, Genevieve, Mary Helen, and brother Thomas and cousin, Colleen and their spouses as his friends. He loved to read, nap, work and play outdoors, go on bike rides, use his BBQ pit, make St. Louis style pizza and spend time with family and friends, including his pets.
He was known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor and deep compassion for those less fortunate.
Dennis was preceded in death by his father Bill, his mother Helen, his close cousin Colleen Warren and his wife Mary Ann. He is survived by his three children, Michael (Ingeborg), Kirsten and August (Rebecca), and his Grandchildren, Samantha, Rachel, Jenny, and Maxwell, his above siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial Mass will be on Tuesday, September 6,2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church, 1971 Dougherty Ferry Rd., Kirkwood, MO 63122
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dennis' memory to the Backstoppers or to CaritasConnenctions .
