Obituary

Dennis G. Ulsomer
November 2, 1938 – September 12, 2025

Baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection and surrounded by family, Dennis passed away peacefully on Friday, September 12, 2025. Beloved husband of Marjorie Ulsomer (nee Pottorff); dear father and father-in-law of Christopher (Jennifer) Ulsomer and Stacy (Michael) Patterson; loving grandfather of Hank Ulsomer and Jane Patterson; our dear brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend.

The only child of Esther and Herbert Ulsomer, Dennis was born in Madison County, IL. Despite becoming familiar with the local authorities at an early age, he graduated from Madison High School and completed his Masters Degree in Business Administration at St. Louis University.

The majority of his career was spent in the healthcare industry, most notably as a Business Manager with the St. Louis University School of Internal Medicine and St. Louis Gastroenterology.

He met Marjorie on a blind date at a Pro-Am tennis tournament in St. Louis, where things began at love-love and ended blissfully with the same result. After an appropriate amount of wining and dining, they married in 1966 and made their home in Florissant and later Chesterfield.

Dennis had numerous interests. He was a fan of the big bands and spending his time listening to music whether in person or on vinyl records, CDs and eventually YouTube. He liked to share the story of once buying a drink for Count Basie. It turns out the Count loved 7-Up.

He and Marjorie participated in a pinochle club in Florissant with several couples who ultimately became lifelong friends. While working at St. Louis University, he became commissioner of a monthly poker game that carried on for decades.

His true passion though was golf. After golfing in Alaska in 2011, he and Marjorie achieved their goal of playing golf in all 50 states plus rounds in Aruba, Bermuda, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. He collected 3 hole-in-ones and was well known on the senior scramble circuit on the near east side, playing nearly every weekday and helping run tournaments. If you asked him what he wanted for a gift, the answer was simple. Golf balls.

Dennis loved his grandkids and kept the legacy of games going with each of them. He and Jane played countless hours of ball with a set of rules she changed constantly to assure she won. And he was always willing to keep up with Hank no matter how many games of Uno or Pass the Trash were to be played.

He fancied himself a poet, having written poems for those close to him. We'll share one which was published in a Fort Lauderdale newspaper.

Lo', the human race
Tis a shame we cannot replace
The dull and discursive pace
That we as mortals face

He would never pass up a good dessert and you could always count on multiple ice cream flavors to choose from in the freezer. In his later years he enjoyed watching sports and his daily routine typically included a Game Show Network marathon.

We wish we could have just one more bowl of ice cream together and watch another episode of Family Feud.
