Obituary

DONNA M. McDONALD (nee Craig) passed peacefully on May 29, 2025; insurance agent, co-owner and partner with her late husband of almost 40 years, D. W. "Mac" McDonald at McDonald Insurance Agency and proud daughter of the late Bert and Elizabeth Craig (nee Gehlauf).

Donna began her career in the insurance industry with the Hartford Insurance Company in the 1950's. She joined the Holton Insurance Agency in 1959 and became a partner and co-owner with D. W. "Mac" McDonald in the McDonald Agency in 1970. She was well known through the insurance industry for her pleasant personality and her ability to help others.

Over the years Donna gave generously of her time serving on the Board of Directors of Queen of Peace Center in St. Louis; as Vice-President, Secretary, Chairperson of the Fashion Show Committee, and committee member of the annual Golf Tournament Fund Raiser. She was a member of the St. Louis Children's Hospital Friends, and active participant with her husband in the University of Missouri Athletic Department at Columbia, Missouri. Donna and her husband were long-time members of Norwood Hills Country Club; she served as Chairperson of the 9 Hole Ladies Golf Association where she championed the art of putting and was nominated Irish Women of the Year in 2011 at the annual Norwood Hills St. Patrick's Party. SSM Health DePaul Hospital- St. Louis was another recipient of Donna's time where she served as a member of the Foundation Board, the Steering Committee for the Capital Fund Campaign in 2007-08; the committees for the annual Gala; and the annual golf tournament.

Donna was active in politics in the 60's and 70's. She was voted Outstanding Young Democrat in Missouri in 1963, and the Outstanding Young Democrat in America in 1965. The award was presented to her in New York by Senator Robert F. Kennedy. She served as the Young Democrat National Committee Woman from Missouri 1964-66 and as National Vice-President of the Young Democrats of America 1966-68. Donna was a volunteer for Senator Symington for many years and was an active "Kennedy Girl" during the John F. Kennedy campaign. She was a charter member of the Women's Democratic Forum.

Donna was a long-time member of Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church.

Those who knew Donna were aware that when a band started playing, her dancing feet started in motion. She danced through this life, helping others, enjoying the good times. Donna was always there for her loved ones and friends during the good times and bad. Her friends would claim "She was one of a kind, sweet and sassy, spunky and classy, kind and lots of fun."

Among her survivors, are her sister and brother-in-law Carole and Ron Schaefer, Sr., brother and sister-in-law Darrel and Joann Craig, 12 nephews, 1 niece, many great nieces and nephews, "Grand Other Mother" to Gigi, Frank, Vince and Ellie Goebel; surrogate grandmother of Margaux, Aimee, Peter and Christiana Soukenik. and a multitude of wonderful friends. She is preceded in death by her husband D. W. Mac McDonald, parents Bert and Elizabeth Craig, sister Marguerite Voss, brother-in-law Maurice McDonald and sister-in-law Mae McDonald. Donna was proud of her family and was quick to remind you she was Bert Craig's daughter and after the death of her parents, Donna became Matriarch of the Craig family.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that Memorial Contributions be made to Queen of Peace Center , Ladue Chapel or Norwood Hills Country Club Scholarship Fund .

Funeral Services: LADUE CHAPEL, 9450 Clayton Rd., St. Louis, MO 63124 on Tuesday, June 10th at 9:30am followed by interment at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
