Elizabeth "Betty"
Ann Stanton
September 8, 1930 – May 16, 2023
Elizabeth "Betty" Ann (nee Buehrle) Stanton, 92 – artist, educator, and mother – passed away on May 16, 2023, comforted by her loving daughters.
From an early age in her hometown of Ferguson, Missouri, Betty loved to draw and create. She won a design contest scholarship that helped defray the cost of college. She graduated from Washington University's College of Art in 1952 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Betty worked for a dozen years as the only female artist at the Creative Advertising Art Studio in downtown St. Louis. She met artist Frank L. Stanton, who had his own studio in the building, and they shared lunches while watching the construction of the St. Louis Arch. After a brief stint teaching art at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, she returned to St. Louis to embark on their 50-year marriage, returning from their honeymoon in Mexico just in time to see the final piece of the Arch installed.
Stepping away from fulltime work to raise their two daughters, Betty continued to freelance and paint. She was a longtime member of the St. Louis Miniature Guild along with her beloved Aunt "Ibby" Branneky. Her creative pursuits kept up with the times – she taught computer graphics at Florissant Valley Community College in the 1980s. She also volunteered many years at Mercy Hospital. But her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren: Jacob, Shane and Ellie.
Betty was born Sept. 8, 1930, to Lena (Epple) and William E. Buehrle. She is survived by her daughters – Laura (David LaGesse) and Carol (Kirk Warner), whose creative careers have carried on their parents' commitment to art. Besides her three grandchildren, she is survived by her sister, Jean (Robert) Kimpling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, her brother, William (Marion) Buehrle, and Sally (Stabenow) Duncan – a cousin who was like a sister.
We celebrate Betty's love for life and art, and her warm and friendly spirit that never wavered.
Private interment Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the St. Louis Artists' Guild or to Seasons Hospice Foundation.
