Gordon Gravius Hartweger passed peacefully Sunday, August 16, 2026. Gordon was born July 14, 1939, to Marge and Frank Hartweger. Married to Kaye Kovol Hartweger for 64 years, together they built an incredible legacy through six children, Gordon Hartweger Jr., Kathi Mimlitz (John), Krissy Olson (George), Peter Hartweger (Molly), Amy Hartweger, John Hartweger (Anna Marie), 18 grandchildren, Ali O'Brien (Casey), Gordon Hartweger III, Jack, Michael and Mary Kate Mimlitz, Colin (Gianna), Katie (Jack), Sean and Jack Olson, Mary Shelby, Hunter, Charlotte, and Molly Hartweger, Julia, John John, Luke, Andrew and Michael Hartweger, and great grandson Murphy O'Brien.
Gordon grew up in Gillespie, IL with his brothers Ed and Lynn who preceded him in death. Graduating from Gillespie high school in 1957, Gordon was a three-sport standout playing basketball, baseball and track. He attended St. Louis University (SLU) on a basketball scholarship and was a proud member and captain of the SLU Billikens basketball team. He played in the 1961 NIT National Championship game at Madison Square Garden. After his basketball career, he was SLU's assistant coach for 5 years and traveled with the team announcing the games with Harry Carry and Jack Buck.
Gordon received his engineering and law degrees at SLU where he met Kaye. Together they raised their family in St. Louis where he began his 50-year law career. His children were his number one priority, coaching their basketball and baseball teams and attending all of their sporting and school events. He worked day and night to ensure his children were provided a Catholic school education.
He was an incredible role model to his children, giving them a solid moral base and showing them through example how to raise their own families surrounded by unconditional love that will last throughout their lifetime.
Our family enjoyed Thursday night picnics in Forest Park before the Muny shows throughout each summer. Gordon will forever live in the hearts of his wife, Kaye, his children and grandchildren.
