Obituary

Imogene Springer, 93, found her new home in Heaven on 6/8/26. She was loved and will be sorely missed by her children Tammy Jarboe, Mary Ann (David) Robinson, and Philip (Marta) Springer; her brother Bill (Teresa) Clark; grandchildren Jon (Kristie), Jackson (Cameryn), Jacqueline (Harold), Olivia, Charles, Lily (Keegan), Brad (Kendra), Patrick (Natasha), and Maxwell (Caroline); and great-grandchildren Harper, Emma, Ada, Oliver, Ruby, and Theo.

Imogene’s strong sense of faith, family, and work was forged in the small farm community where she was born and raised. Ed Clark, her father, was a successful first-generation farmer and Van Wert institution who arrived therefrom Pennsylvania as a young man looking for opportunity. Van Wert farmers were smart, hardworking, churchgoing, and plain-speaking (only the cookies were sugar coated).

After graduating high school with honors (first in her class numbering 7!), she married Wayne Springer, her devoted husband of over fifty years, bore three children and moved to the big city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and then on to the bigger city of St. Louis. She and Wayne held leadership positions in the PTA and Scouting. They were particularly keen to identify and nurture the unique and individual talents of Tammy, Mary Ann, and Phil. Imogene was particularly proud of educational milestones, including her own college degree, and also those of her children and grandchildren, which include a number of PhDs.

Imogene’s career achievements after college included administrative and quality control positions with Defense Contractor McDonald Douglass. Later in life, she and Wayne were able to proudly team up with Phil in several of his many and varied business ventures (starting with a neighborhood lawn business), where Imogene bloomed in her roles as book keeper, account manager, investor, co-strategist, and basically “head cook and bottle washer.”

With her love ofchildren, Imogene was an enthusiastic and warm grandmother, generating priceless memories of fun (water skiing in Texas); non-sugar-coated advice (after a tough basketball loss reminding the disappointed grandchild that there are likely many more disappointments on the horizon); and adventure (demonstrating amazing “old school” survival skills, including cooking at the fireplace, when stranded with the grandkids during a multi-day road closure and power loss). She was always interested in her grandchildren’s exploits and was unfailingly delighted by her Colorado granddaughters’ athletic feats. A lifelong lover of music and prone to bursting into song, she was dubbed by one family member (a professional musician) as his “favorite lead singer.”

From her earliest years, Imogene was a faithful servant of God. She loved and supported Bonhomme Presbyterian Church with her presence and boundless service. She headed up numerous church committees and was most popular for leading the group of women who provided refreshments for mourning families through the “Cookie Brigade.”

During the last chapter of Imogene’s life, after the passing of her beloved Wayne, she was delighted to find love again in the person of James “Jim” Dick. Their marriage at Friendship Village brought her much joy. She also loved her community of friends and many activities there, especially including both vocal and bell choir.

Imogene was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Naomi Thatcher Clark; first husband, Wayne Springer; brother, James Clark and wife Martha; sister, Joan Jones and husband Howard; sister-in-law Betty Fent and husband Charlie; brother-in-law Carl Springer and wife Marilyn; and brother-in-law Clayton Springer.

A memorial service will be held at Friendship Village – Chesterfield Friday, June 19, at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, donations to Friendship Village Chaplain’s Fund are appreciated, (c/o Chaplain Burt Campbell, 15201 Olive Blvd, Chesterfield, MO 63017) .
