James Henry Hahn
Baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection, Wed., May 24, 2023. Beloved husband of Mary JoAnn Hahn (nee Becker); dear father and father-in-law of William J. (Francesa Grifo) Hahn, Robert L. Hahn, Stephen T. (Anne) Hahn-Smith, Mary Jo (J. David) Heindel and David R. Hahn; loving grandfather of Benjamin L. Hahn, Jake Heindel, Aldo Grifo-Hahn, Lena Hahn, Luca Grifo-Hahn, Madeleine Hahn-Smith, Nora Heindel, Elijah Hahn-Smith and Jackson Hahn-Smith; dear brother of Marilyn (Glenn) Kellum and the late Robert (Peggy) Hahn; our dear brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend.
Jim was born in a small town in Southeastern Missouri and was the first member of his family to go beyond high school ultimately earning a PhD in Electrical Engineering from UM-Rolla (MUST). He had a successful career in the private sector then moved to academia retiring as Director of his alma mater's Engineering Education Center in St. Louis. He served in many roles at the IEEE, volunteered his time as a technical consultant to VITA, and served as a judge and coordinator for the Missouri Science Olympiad. Additionally, Jim was a member of the academic honor societies Eta Kappa Nu, Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Pi as well as the social fraternity Sigma Tau Gamma . He was a long-time volunteer at St. Monica Church and enjoyed fishing, traveling, and puttering on old computers and other electronic devices.
Jim was a consummate teacher having won an award of honor for education from IEEE and Outstanding Engineer in Education from the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers. He was a patient and loving father and his children remarked that he always had time to help them with schoolwork, understand complicated concepts, and show them how to repair just about anything.
Jim donated his body to St. Louis University School of Medicine to help educate future physicians. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Monica Church, 12136 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur, Saturday, June 24, 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Heart & Vascular Hospital.
