James "Jim"
Howard Barry
November 30, 1937 – September 23, 2023
James "Jim" Howard Barry, 85, passed away peacefully at home with family by
his side on Saturday, September 23, 2023. He was born on November 30, 1937.
Jim was the oldest of five children of Howard and Frances (O'Keefe) Barry.
Jim demonstrated his unwavering work ethic from a young age, walking several
miles to Norwood to caddy as a boy. He continued this with his dedication to
schooling, including several majors over 10 years, with the completion of his
degree in accounting from the University of Missouri – St. Louis.
Jim was a dedicated employee for Schnuck Markets for over 46 years. Upon his
retirement, he filled his days working his dream jobs in the world of golf – both at
Norwood Hills Country Club and Pheasant Run Golf Course.
Jim had a passion for golf his entire life, and his true alter ego of "Jimbo" was
present on the course in many entertaining ways. He played in competitive putt-
putt tournaments across the Midwest in his younger years. He enjoyed sharing
his love for golf through teaching others and playing with his sons and
grandchildren. The golf outing he looked forward to most above all was the
annual golf trip to Springfield, Illinois, which he participated in for more than 30
consecutive years.
Jim was also a fixture at Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex (BMAC) coaching
many softball teams through the years. He was fiercely competitive and led a
Sunday night team with his boys as well as coached several women's softball
teams.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his siblings Jack
Barry, Pat (Ron) Peak, Kathy (Jerry) Niedringhaus, and Marianne (Henry)
Jansen; his former wife, Mary Jo Barry, and their children Tina (Ray) Cox, Steve
(Kim) Barry, Mike (Melissa) Barry, Rick (Amy) Barry, Tom (Andrea) Barry, and
Greg (Misha) Barry and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
