Jane Louise Williamson was born November 11, 1935, and died of natural causes September 6, 2025, at the age of 89.
She was Professor of English and Chair of the English Department at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She began her career at UM-St. Louis in 1967 and officially retired in 2000. However she continued to teach for several years after that with more time for reading, travel and going to plays.
Her extensive research on William Shakespeare took her often to London and Stratford-upon-Avon, England, where she saw the full repertoire of the Royal Shakespeare Company. She is the author of the book Charles Kemble, Man of the Theatre, a selection of the American Library Association for the Outstanding Academic Books List. She also wrote many published research articles on Shakespeare and English theater. Jane is highly respected as a scholar and teacher. Her teaching brought her the AMOCO Award for Outstanding Teacher in Humanities, UM-St. Louis.
Jane is the daughter of the late Ruth Moke Williamson and the late Elmer M. Williamson. She received her A.B. degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Jane was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi academic honor societies and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She graduated as class Valedictorian from Normandy High School, where she later taught English, as well as teaching at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and University of Wisconsin, Madison. Jane's special interests included swimming, tennis, and archery.
