Obituary

John Patrick (“Jack”) Carmody, M.D., age 88, fortified with the Sacraments of the Holy Mother Church, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on November 5, 2026.

Beloved husband for 66 years of Lucy Knight Carmody; loving father of James P. (Kayleen) Carmody, J. Paul Carmody and Mary E. (Jeff) Igou; cherished Papa of Matthew Carmody and Jack, Joe, and Charlie Igou; dear brother of the late Donald R. (Pat) Carmody, William J. (Ellen) Carmody, Gerard T. (Suzzie) Carmody, the late Mary Georgia Hodapp (Ed), and James P. (Nannette) Carmody. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Timothy and Mary Elizabeth Carmody.

Born on April 25, 1938, Jack grew up in St. Louis, attending Our Lady of the Pillar and Chaminade, where he was quarterback of the varsity football team and catcher for the baseball team, once scouted by the Giants. Jack then attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, majoring in pre-med. It was at Spring Hill that he met his loving and devoted wife, Lucy Knight.

Following graduation, Jack and Lucy married at Spring Hill Chapel on September 3, 1960. They moved back to St. Louis to start their family and for Jack to attend Saint Louis University Medical School, graduating in 1964. Over the years, he maintained medical practices on Lansdowne Avenue, St. Joseph Hospital and St. Anthony’s Hospital, specializing in internal medicine and endocrinology. He was a patient and dedicated physician who was beloved by his many loyal patients for the time and care he gave to them.

Jack was a proud and dutiful veteran who was a captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. In 1967, he served as a physician in the 31st Field Hospital in Korat, Thailand, missing the birth of his daughter, Mary, while serving his country. In later years, he made many return trips to Southeast Asia, including several medical missions.

Jack was a devoted Catholic who faithfully prayed the rosary. He loved the Cardinals and traveling, but his greatest passion was reading, which led him to amass an impressive personal library. In his later years, nothing brought him greater joy than being Papa to his four grandsons.

His kindness, intellect, and humor will be deeply missed, but we find comfort in knowing that he is now at peace in his heavenly home in the loving presence of God.
