Obituary

Beloved husband of the late Barbara Anne Meek (nee Browne); dear father and father-in-law of Joseph (Sherrie) Meek, Thomas, James and John (Christine) Meek; dear grandfather of Patrick (Lauren) Meek, Kathleen Meek, Elizabeth (Adam) Essler, Courtney (Dan) Jacob and Kaleigh (Reese) Park; dear great grandfather of Cooper Bigham, Caroline Meek and Tessa Jacob, passed away on Friday, February 20th.His family is deeply saddened by his passing, and it is to note that days before his death, he was asked what he was most proud of.  His response was simply, "My family."

Born on December 10, 1935, Joe was the only child of the late Joseph C. Meek, Sr. and the late Louise G. Meek.  Working many odd jobs to help the family growing up, Joe was also a champion speedskater, winning the St. Louis Silver Skates in 1949 as a Juvenile Boy, as well as many other races and championships throughout the Midwest.  His prowess at skating led to a job as a guard at the Winter Garden ice rink, where he met Barbara.  Joe was president of the senior class at Ritenour High School, where he graduated in 1954.  Joe and Barbara were married on February 19, 1955, and had four sons, Joseph, Thomas, James and John in the years to follow.

Joe's passion for accounting led him to pass the CPA and CMA examinations and to join John ("Jack") Aselage to create and grow the accounting firm Aselage, Meek & Company, based originally in St. Johns.  After many successful years, he moved to St. Louis University's School of Business, teaching accounting classes and rising to the rank of full professor and at one time, Associate Dean.  Many successful St. Louis accountants started their journeys in Mr. Meek's Introductory or Intermediate accounting classes.

Upon his retirement from teaching, Joe worked with Loyola Academy and Jesuit Hall at St. Louis University.  After Barbara's passing in 2020, Joe became a resident of St. Agnes Home, where he greatly appreciated the efforts of the wonderful Sisters and the very helpful and attentive staff in continuing his care and fostering his deep faith.

We invite family and friends to celebrate Joe's life on Saturday March 7, 2026.  Visitation at St. Agnes Home, 10341 Manchester Road, St. Louis, MO  63122 begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in the Chapel at 10:00 a.m.  A reception will immediately follow at St. Agnes.  Burial at Calvary Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Loyola Academy, 3851 Washington Ave., St. Louis, MO  63108.
