Lenene Isabelle
Link Andre
September 13, 1935 – August 6, 2022
Lenene Isabelle Link André was born on Friday, September 13, 1935 in Los Angeles, California. She fought a valiant battle against Alzheimer's Disease, and passed away on August 6, 2022 in Creve Coeur, Missouri, at age 86.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard Kenneth Link and Isabelle Walker Carney Link of North Hollywood, California.
A graduate of Hollywood High School, Lenene attended Los Angeles Valley College where she met her future husband of 66 years, George M. André.
Lenene and George married on May 19, 1956, at the former St. David's Episcopal Church in North Hollywood, after George's graduation from United States Air Force pilot training,. Following a honeymoon in Laguna Beach, the newlyweds set off for Texas, where Lenene began her married life as a military officer's wife. She excelled as a model military spouse in adapting to the customs in those years. George's career as a fighter pilot and test pilot necessitated many lonely and anxious times for Lenene, but she lovingly accepted the conditions of his role.
In 1963, she earned a Federal Aviation Administration private pilot's certificate. The following year, George and Lenene adopted their infant son, David. In 1965 Lenene gave birth to their daughter, Laura.
George became an airline pilot in 1967, and the family lived in Palos Verdes, California, until 1974 when a job transfer brought them to Overland Park, Kansas. There Lenene resumed her academic studies and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas—and became a devoted Jayhawk. After a short stint in Connecticut, in 1990 they settled in the St. Louis area, where Lenene worked at Edward D. Jones and as a library technician at Saint Charles County Community College.
Lenene devoted much of her adult life to volunteerism. As a young mother, she taught Sunday School and was a Little League baseball scorekeeper; later, she taught English to Spanish speakers and literacy to at-risk adolescent girls. She put in many hours at the Wings of Hope Humanitarian Aviation Organization, Pathways Hospice and Palliative Care of Chesterfield, Missouri, and St. Timothy's Episcopal Church of Creve Coeur.
Lenene's life was filled with adventure, from backpacking with George to the top of Mount Whitney to hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. In 1963, she lived with George in Ankara, Turkey, while he was working for Lockheed. During her time there, she made a pilgrimage to the house of the Virgin Mary near Ephesus. To celebrate her seventieth birthday, she skydived out of an airplane. Four decades after earning her pilot's license, she requalified as an FAA-licensed pilot at age 68. She loved playing tennis, cycling, and gardening.
Beloved sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, Lenene is survived by her husband, George M. André, son David (Lynette), daughter Laura (Candace), sister Peggy Aughenbaugh (Dennis), and grandchildren Jackson (Princess), Brendan, Honorée, and Nathaniel. The devoted caregivers, hospice workers, and clergy who gracefully helped Lenene and her family transition peacefully include Angie, Dana, Joanie, Karon, Lorie, Vivian, and Chaplain Ed LeClair.
Among countless qualities, gifts, and talents, she will be remembered for her kindness, her ready smile, and sparkling eyes.
A private family interment will take place at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Pathways Hospice Foundation at https://www.pathwayscomfort.com/foundation .
