Obituary

Margaret Mary McCullough died peacefully surrounded by family on January 21, 2024 in Chesterfield. She was 94 years old. She had received the sacraments of the Catholic Church. Margaret was the daughter of George J. Reichert and E. Louise Bloemer Reichert. She was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee, WI, and baptized at Gesu Church on the campus of Marquette University, the alma mater of her parents.

Preceding Margaret in death were her husband Patrick J. McCullough, her great-grandson, Delavan James Johnson, her two younger brothers, George A. Reichert and Tom Reichert, her sister-in-law Eileen McCullough, and her brother-n-law John McCullough. Margaret is survived by three daughters, Colleen (Keith) Foster of Holts Summit, MO, Catherine (Tom) Mulhall of Buena Vista, CO, and Mary (John) Pires of Lexington, TX, and five sons, Michael of San Diego, CA, George (Rene) of Brookfield, WI, Dr. Timothy (Jill) of Chesterfield, Thomas (Ginny) of Glendale, WI, and Kevin of Des Peres. Also left to mourn are two beloved sister-n-laws: Sr. Ann McCullough and Sandy McCullough, Reichert nephews and nieces: Jeff, Mike, Therese, Dana, Heidi, Lisa, 21 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Margaret was convent-school educated at Holy Angels Academy in Milwaukee and St. Gertrude Academy in Boulder, CO, a boarding high school for girls.

After graduation from St. Gertrude, Margaret enrolled at the St. Anthony Hospital School of Nursing, Denver, CO, and graduated in 1950. After becoming registered, she began work as a nurse in Denver.

In 1951, Margaret married Patrick McCullough at St. Dominic's Church, Denver. They took an extended wedding trip to San Francisco, CA, where Mr. McCullough was employed, and began housekeeping in a small apartment at 2608 Green Street in the Pacific Heights section of San Francisco. After a job transfer to Appleton, WI, Mr. McCullough was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned as Assistant Supply Officer of the U.S.S. Shenandoah (AO-26), based in Norfolk, VA. He and the Shenandoah were at sea when Hurricane Barbara struck Norfolk in 1953. In spite of widespread damage, Margaret and her young child, were unharmed. After Navy duty, the McCullough's returned to Denver, where Mr. McCullough began a 36-year employment with General American Life Insurance Company, St. Louis, in that company's branch mortgage loan office. In 1964, they moved again to the home office in St. Louis, and purchased a home at 70 River Valley Drive, Chesterfield, MO, where they lived for more than 50 years.

In January of 1967, the McCullough house was struck by a large tornado and suffered severe damage. Patrick and Margaret suffered slight injuries which required hospital treatments, but none of the children were injured. The tornado was the second natural disaster experienced by Margaret during her marriage (Hurricane Barbara in Norfolk was the first). In appreciation of her contributions to Edgewood College, Madison, WI, Margaret was elected as a member of the Cadwallader Washburn Society there. Cadwallader Washburn was the founder of Gold Medal Flour Company, later merged with General Mills, Inc., which has kept the Gold Medal brand to this day. Cadwallader Washburn also donated the land on the shore of Lake Wingra for the establishment of Edgewood College. Two of the McCullough Children, Catherine and Kevin, graduated from Edgewood, and their aunt, Ann C. McCullough, OP served as a professor and Trustee of the College.
