Obituary

Michael Coulter Smith passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025 at the age of 85 in Bertram, TX.   He died of natural causes and had been in hospice care for some time prior. He was living at the time with his ex-stepson, Blayke Anderson, who cared for him in his final year.

Michael was born in Evanston, IL on December 30, 1939 to Frederick and Lucille (Bobby) Smith.  They moved to Kansas City where he started high school. It was there that he began to build lifelong connections, develop a penchant for zany house projects, and a taste for luxury. There he also met and married his first wife, Nancy Mayer Smith. They were married 46 years before divorcing in 2008.  He went on to marry two more times.

Michael had a thirst for life that was infectious and seemingly insatiable.  He adored people and was a lifelong connector. He loved getting to know someone new and finding ways to support them in their pursuits.  He couldn't resist fomenting mischief, whether in some far-fetched house project, or just opening his home for extravagant food and fun. He was also a shopper, legendary for his taste in clothes and art.

A natural salesman, he started his career in sales and quickly moved into the insurance business. He stayed connected to that industry throughout his life.  Later, he focused on supporting family held businesses and providing them with insurance, financial and trustee services.

His legacy lives on in his children and their families. He is survived by his daughter, Stacey Smith, and son, Coulter Smith. Stacey lives in Oakland CA with her husband Roger Solin and their daughters Melissa and Rissa. Michael's step-granddaughter, Malena Solin, resides in New York. Coulter lives in St. Louis MO with his wife Emilie and their three daughters Eleanor, Anna, and Lauren.  He is also survived by his younger brother Christopher "Kit" Smith (Diana P. Smith), of Broomfield, CO.

A service will be held on April 11, 2026 at 2PM, with a viewing to start at 1PM at Ortmann Stipanovich Funeral Home, 12444 Olive Blvd, Creve Coeur, MO.  He will be remembered alongside his former wife, Nancy Mayer Smith. No gifts or remembrances please.
