Michelle Yuan-Yuan
Morgenstern
October 2, 1963 – March 14, 2025
Michelle Yuan-Yuan Morgenstern, a cherished mother, accomplished researcher, and devoted friend, passed away on March 14, 2025, at the age of 61. She was the daughter of Ching-Lin Chu and Cheng-Mei Chu.
Michelle is survived by her loving husband, David, her sons Evan and Glen, and her family in San Francisco. This includes her mother Cheng-Mei Chu; brother Bing Chu; and four sisters Deday Shao, Wan-Wan Hong, Vivian Lyo, and Frances Chen. She is deeply missed by countless friends and extended family.
She was born as Yuan-Yuan Chu in Taipei, Taiwan on October 2, 1963, as the youngest of six siblings. At 15 years old, Yuan-Yuan immigrated to the United States with her family. Transitioning to life in Los Angeles, Yuan-Yuan named herself Michelle after the 1965 Beatles song.
Michelle attended Eagle Rock High School, frequently munching on tortilla chips while watching their renowned marching band. She enrolled in UC Berkeley, where she met her husband, David Morgenstern, earned a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, and conducted laboratory research with mentorship from distinguished scientists Darleane Hoffman and Glenn Seaborg. After graduating, Michelle continued her education at top-ranked Purdue University, completing her Master's degree in Environmental Engineering with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Her expertise led her to the prestigious Los Alamos National Laboratory, where her meticulous work restoring heavily polluted environments to habitable conditions left a lasting impact.
In 1989, Michelle and David married, and together they built a loving home in Saint Louis, Missouri, raising their two sons, Evan and Glen. Michelle found joy in traveling, solving puzzles, listening to classical music, and creating lasting memories with family and friends.
Michelle endeared nearly everyone she met with her skill in the kitchen. Over her life, Michelle mastered everything from the art of traditional Chinese cooking in Taiwan to Mexican food in California to her signature homemade pesto from basil she cultivated in her St. Louis garden. Particularly known for baking, her Christmas cookies outshone regional bakeries every year. Baking non-stop for a week, Michelle's brandy snaps, springerles, and chocolate florentines enamored neighbors, friends, youth sports teams, and high school newspaper staff, winning an unprecedented and affectionate "Panorama Mom" award for her efforts.
A celebration of Michelle's extraordinary life will be held at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, California on Monday, March 24 at 12:30 pm.
