Dr. Norman J. Ehlinger, Jr.
December 14, 1955 – September 28, 2026
Dr. Norman J. Ehlinger Jr., 70, passed away on September 28, 2026, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of love, laughter, generosity, and a lifetime devoted to helping others.
Norman grew up in Okemos, Michigan, and attended Michigan State University before pursuing his calling in medicine. Following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Norman J. Ehlinger Sr., Norman was proud to become a second-generation physician. Growing up, he often recalled being told that he would never become a doctor, as many saw him as an athlete rather than an academic. Proving those doubters wrong and fulfilling his dream of practicing medicine became one of his proudest accomplishments. Through determination, hard work, and perseverance, he went on to attend Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in 1984. He later moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he dedicated more than 40 years to practicing family and emergency medicine.
For Norman, being a physician was more than a profession; it was truly his passion. Throughout his career, he saved countless lives and touched countless more, offering not only medical care but compassion, comfort, and kindness to those who needed it most. He genuinely loved what he did, and his desire to help others extended far beyond the walls of a hospital or doctor's office.
While Norman was incredibly proud of his career in medicine, nothing brought him greater joy than being a father and grandfather. He was a devoted and loving father to his two children, Jessica Vaughn and John Jacob Ehlinger, whom he encouraged to work hard, dream big, and never stop pursuing their goals. Having overcome doubts about his own abilities early in life, he understood the importance of believing in yourself, even when others didn't. He led by example, instilling in his children the importance of dedication, compassion, and perseverance. His passion for medicine and helping others even inspired his daughter, Jessica, to pursue a career in healthcare herself. He was their biggest fan, their greatest cheerleader, and a constant source of encouragement and support.
Later in life, Norman found another great joy in being a grandfather to his four beloved grandchildren, Vivian Ehlinger, Isabella Ehlinger, Colin Vaughn, and Declan Vaughn. They were truly the light of his life, and he treasured the time he spent with each of them.
Norman also shared more than 20 years with his longtime significant other, Denise Maurer, who was an important source of love and support throughout his life. He loved Denise and her family dearly and cherished the many years they shared together.
Outside of medicine, Norman knew how to enjoy life. He loved traveling, boating, enjoying a great meal, cheering on his favorite college and professional sports teams, and spending time with family. He had a passion for music and was never shy about singing along, often loudly and enthusiastically, whether anyone asked him to or not.
Those who knew Norman will forever remember his quick wit, sharp sarcasm, and unforgettable sense of humor. He had a way of making anyone laugh, often when they least expected it. He was famous for his endless collection of one-liners and sayings, many of which are probably best left out of print. But for those who knew and loved him, there's no doubt they can still hear him saying them. Norman was unapologetically himself, and that was part of what made him so special.
Beyond his humor, Norman had an extraordinary gift for making everyone he encountered feel important, valued, and genuinely cared for. Whether you had known him for decades or had just met him, he had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the room. He was incredibly generous, selfless, and always willing to help someone in need. His heart was as big as his personality, and the impact he made on the lives around him was immeasurable.
Norman is survived by his children, Jessica Vaughn and John Jacob Ehlinger; his four beloved grandchildren, Vivian Ehlinger, Isabella Ehlinger, Colin Vaughn, and Declan Vaughn; his brother, John Ehlinger; his sister, Sharon Osborn; and his longtime companion, Denise Maurer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Norman J. Ehlinger Sr. and Dorothy Ehlinger, and his brother, Michael Ehlinger.
Memorial Service
A memorial visitation and service honoring Norman's life will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026 at Ortmann-Stipanovich Funeral Home, 12444 Olive Boulevard, Creve Coeur, Missouri 63141. Visitation at 12:00 pm with memorial service at 1:00 pm.
A celebration of his life will follow from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Spiro's. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate a life so well lived.
Norman's greatest legacy cannot be measured simply by the lives he saved, but by the lives he touched, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He lived with passion, loved wholeheartedly, and never missed an opportunity to make someone laugh. While he will be missed more than words can express, he would never want those he loved to dwell in sadness. Instead, he would want us to celebrate the good times, share a great meal, turn up the music, tell a few inappropriate jokes, and raise a glass in his honor.
