Paul Arthur
Scheidt
April 15, 1936 – April 5, 2024
Rev. Paul Scheidt woke up in Heaven the morning of April 5, 2024, 10 days shy of his 88th birthday. He was the oldest of 10 children, born in Lexington, Kentucky, to Rev. Arthur Louis Scheidt and Leonora Elizabeth Scheidt (nee Hoyer), six of whom survive him: Theodore (Judy) Scheidt, Ellen (Paul) Eich, David (Alice Alexander) Scheidt, Mary (Jim) Mulligan, Jonathan (Rita) Scheidt, and Katie (Bruce) Paul. He was preceded in death by siblings Ruth (James) Irwin, Peter Scheidt, and Esther Scheidt.
In seventh grade, Paul was called to follow generations of his family before him and dedicated his life to preaching the Gospel of Christ. He graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1961 and served at his first church, St. John's Lutheran in Wapakoneta, Ohio, until 1966. His second full-time church was his last—Concordia Lutheran in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he preached until his "retirement" in 2000. Soon after, he served as a part-time Assistant Pastor at Bethany Lutheran, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, until 2010.
Besides his life-long faith in Christ, Paul was most proud of his family. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Edythe Doerring, whom he married June 10, 1961, at St. John's Lutheran, Luana, Iowa. After raising their family in Cedar Rapids, Paul and Edie later moved to St. Louis, Missouri, to be near their daughters Cindy (Glenn) Regan, Christy Scheidt (Tom Meuser) and Carla (Kennon) Cox, as well as grandchildren Jacob and Tommy Regan; Paul, Aaron and June Meuser; and Hayley, Rachel and Brandon Cox.
If you knew Paul, you know he loved gardening (except tomatoes!), woodworking, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. No discussion of Paul is complete without mentioning his jokes. His sense of humor was with him to the end, as he described his choice to donate his body for research as a chance "to go to medical school!"
