Obituary

Péter Mosányi passed away in St. Louis on December 18, 2024, just shy of his 81st birthday. Péter was the beloved husband of Éva (née Urbán) for 55 years, devoted father of Erich (of Scottsdale, Arizona), Péter (Jason Wibbenmeyer) (of Seattle, Washington), and Kristina Reary (of St. Louis, Missouri), adoring grandfather to Milanka, Alina, and Rikka, brother-in-law of Lad and Pavlina Urbán (of Adelaide, Australia). He was preceded in death by his parents Gyula and Ema (née Mayling) Mosányi (of Košice, Slovakia).

Peter was born on December 27, 1943, in his cherished city of Kassa, Hungary (present-day Košice, Slovakia) where he attended the city's Hungarian elementary and secondary education schools and the city's architectural college. Peter spent summers at his grandmother's home in Szomolnok (Smolník), Slovakia, located in the foothills of the Tatra Mountains, where he learned the German language and discovered his appreciation for the outdoors, orienteering, and sports, including soccer, boxing, and skiing.

In 1966, Peter met his wife and best friend Eva, and after a short courtship married in 1969. After several joint trips to Western Europe, Peter and Eva started their family in Košice, Slovakia. Following the Soviet occupation of Slovakia, the family decided to emigrate – first, escaping to Austria where the family spent nine months, and then to the United States where the family was granted political refugee and asylum seeker status. Peter and Eva made their home in St. Louis where they lovingly raised their three children. Peter was the owner of Eurocolor, an interior/exterior painting company that beautified St. Louis' most notable country clubs and businesses.

Peter lived a long, fun-filled life with an appetite for historical documentaries, diverse foods, cultural celebrations, and, of course, frequent trips to the casino(s) to play the slots. Publicly, Peter was a man of few words, but privately he could turn any conversation into a lively discussion, covering anything related to history, especially the two World Wars, or memories of his Jawa 250 motorcycle or time spent with the Czechoslovak army in Brno. When he told a story it would likely impart wisdom, probably involve food (and a shot from the "bárpult"), and often leave you laughing. Peter spent his life enjoying outdoor activities, especially weekend trips to a local lake or annual vacations to locales stretching from coast-to-coast. Peter especially enjoyed traveling the world, particularly to his beloved homeland, and the many wonderful trips he was fortunate enough to take with family and friends.

Peter's life was a tapestry of love, selflessness, and cherished traditions. He will be remembered for his storytelling, quick dry wit, and modest demeanor. Above all, he was a devoted family man, with the Hungarian church and his faith of great importance to him.  Peter's legacy will endure in the lives and hearts of those he touched, the stories he shared, and the family and friends he adored. He will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Saint Mary of Victories Catholic Church, St. Louis' Hungarian Catholic Church and cultural center, at https://giving.archstl.org/Donate/st-mary-of-victories

A private Celebration of Life will be held for family and close friends.
