James went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Mary Hoffmann (nee Weaver). He was the loving father of Jim (Laura) Hoffmann of Searcy, AR; Jamie (Darrell) Eye of Highland Village, TX; Jana (Matt) Hauk of Wentzville, MO. He was the loving grandfather of Rachel (Nathan) Ashley, Luke (Chloe) Hoffmann, Stephen (Hannah) Hoffmann, Megan (Bob) Gunn, Jake (Dawn) Eye, Jared Eye, Chris Hauk and Nate Hauk. He was the proud great-grandfather of James Ashley, Kate Ashley, Ezra Hoffmann, Ike Hoffmann, Izzie Ortiz, Callie Gunn, Carson Eye and Cooper Eye.
He is also survived by two sisters, Minnie Gillam and Mary Shults. He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Mary Irene Hoffmann, brother Don Hoffmann and sister Ola Smith.
James was born in St. Louis, MO. He surrendered to preach in August 1961 and was ordained in November 1962. After graduating from Central Baptist College in Conway AR in 1965, he pastored churches of the Baptist Missionary Association of America in Arkansas, Missouri and Michigan. He also served as a missionary in Alaska. He returned to his childhood church, Bethany Baptist Church in Overland, MO as pastor in 1988 where he faithfully served until his retirement in 2015. Along with his active involvement in the Baptist Missionary Association of America he also served as editor of The Missouri Missionary Baptist paper for 33 years. His favorite way to spend time was loving on his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved woodworking, gardening, fishing and traveling.
Visitation will be at the Ortmann Stipanovich Funeral Home, 12444 Olive Blvd, Creve Coeur MO on Thursday January 16, 2025 from 4-8 pm. Funeral Service will be at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Jonesboro, AR on Saturday January 18, 2025 at 12 pm with visitation from 11 am until the service time. Interment at Bishop Cemetery in Jonesboro AR.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Camp Garwood in c/o Chris Polk PO Box 271, Matthews, MO 63867 . Camp Garwood is a free youth camp in Missouri that was very dear to the heart of James. He spent many hours helping with the upkeep and construction of the buildings that aided in leading many young souls to the Lord.
