Downs
July 20, 1936 – July 3, 2024
Ron Downs, born July 20, 1936, and died July 3, 2024, a beloved scientist, outdoorsman, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He was a retired researcher from Monsanto, where he dedicated many years to scientific innovation and excellence.
Ron's journey began in Akron, where he earned a chemistry degree that laid the foundation for his esteemed career. He furthered his education by earning a Ph.D. from Purdue University, which propelled him into a distinguished career in scientific research.
Born with a natural curiosity and love for nature, Ron found his true passion in the great outdoors. An avid hiker, he cherished the rugged beauty of the Oregon Trail, finding solace and inspiration in its vast landscapes. Missouri's pristine streams were his favorite spots for trout fishing with a fly rod, where he spent countless hours perfecting his technique and enjoying the serene waters.
A man of many interests, Ron was an enthusiastic member of his local chess club, where he delighted in the strategic challenge and camaraderie. His fascination with the night sky made him a dedicated stargazer, always eager to share his knowledge and wonder with those around him.
Retiring at the age of 55, Ron embraced every moment of his newfound freedom, filling his days with adventure, discovery, and the simple joys of life. His zest for living and his boundless curiosity left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Ron is survived by his loving wife, Anna Catherine Downs, his sons Bradley and Robert, his daughter Quinn, and a community of friends who will forever remember his kind heart, inquisitive mind, and the joy he brought to their lives. His legacy of curiosity, passion for the outdoors, and love for life will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him.
A celebration of Ron's life will be held at Creve Coeur Golf Course on Monday, July 8 from 12-4 p.m., where stories will be shared, and his memory honored. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House, continuing Ron's spirit of generosity and support for families in need.
