Obituary

William "Bill" Joseph Zickel Jr., of Creve Coeur, departed this life on December 13, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on September 17, 1934, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Blanche and William Joseph Zickel Sr.

Bill grew up in a loving family, alongside his siblings Jean Zickel and Shirley Huesgen (Stan), who preceded him in death, and his brother John Steven Zickel (Joan), who survives him.

Bill graduated from CBC High School in St. Louis and went on to earn a degree from what is now known as Missouri S&T, where he was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. A devout Catholic, Bill found comfort in attending Mass and spending quiet moments in prayer during adoration before the Eucharist.

Bill's love for God was mirrored in his love for his beloved wife, Patricia Ann (Johnson) Zickel, who preceded him in death. He honored her memory in countless ways, including taking over her cherished tradition of handing out M&Ms to anyone who helped their family. Patricia believed in honoring the helpers in life, and Bill ensured that love and gratitude continued to live on after her passing.

Together, Bill and Patricia raised three wonderful children: Michele Roberts, Diane Ewing (Bruce), and David Zickel (Lisa). He was a devoted and loving grandfather to Felicia Roberts (Tiffany), Nick Roberts (Regina), Austin Ewing (Edie), Christopher Ewing, Ryan Zickel (Alexis), and Kyle Zickel, and a doting great-grandfather to Wren Ewing.

Professionally, Bill dedicated himself to Zickel Flooring, the family business founded by his father in 1945. Under Bill's leadership, the company grew from its modest beginnings into a respected name in the flooring industry, expanding to Springfield in 1960 and relocating its St. Louis headquarters to Fenton in 1976. Today, Zickel Flooring remains a family business, a testament to the values of integrity and excellence that Bill instilled in those who carry on his legacy.

Bill found joy in life's simple pleasures, from playing golf to cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs with his family. He cherished these moments of connection and togetherness, creating lasting memories with those he loved. Bill's steadfast faith, enduring love, and selfless spirit remain an inspiration to all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Bill's memory be made to The Alzheimer's Association, in honor of his dear wife, Patricia, or to The BackStoppers.

In honor of Patricia and Bill, remember that their greatest wish was for others to find the good in the world and to become part of it. They lived their lives by seeking out the helpers and showing gratitude to those who served others. May their legacy inspire us all to do the same.
